Types Of Markets – Betting Opportunities

So far you have read enough and are well aware of the pitfalls to avoid in online gambling.
You have also opened an account with a bookmaker and have topped up your card so you are ready to rip the bloody bookie off tonight by staking £100 on Barcelona …

My granny used to say, “Hold your horses, boy, all in good time”.

Now that you have reached this point, dedicate some more time to getting familiar with the different types of bets you can place.

It is not only about 1X2 or Overs/Unders. There are so many possibilities to consider so as to enhance your hit rate enormously.

Let me draw your attention to several points before we go on:

  • Always try to place wagers on events with fewer outcomes since the likelihood of a particular outcome increases.
  • Don’t be lured by exotic markets. The odds they offer are so far from fair that you had better play lotto.
  • When placing a bet, check if the markets covering your bet are offering better odds. For instance, if you place a bet on Tottenham at 1, check the Asian handicap odds for -0.5 on Tottenham. In essence, the bet is the same and Tottenham is bound to win but the odds may differ slightly, which will boost your profit.

The following section of the article looks briefly at several different types of markets on which you can bet with different bookmakers. If you want to know more about an opportunity, simply click on its name.
If you are a beginner, I suggest you look at all of them. Even if any of these seems too straightforward or elementary, there could be details you haven’t considered.

Types of Markets

  • 1Х2
Betting on the winner of a match makes the most popular market. You can also bet on a team to lead at first or second half-time.
  • 1Х2 with handicap
This is also known as three-way handicap. Here bookmakers apply a certain advantage (of one or more goals) to one of the teams. It can be written either as a negative number (-1, -2, etc.) or as a positive one (+1, +2, etc.)

Example:  Manchester City – Everton +1 goal for the Away Team (Everton), which is the same as handicap -1 for Manchester City. That means Everton starts with an advantage of one goal, and vice versa, Manchester City kicks off with a losing start of one goal.

    • If City wins by a one-goal margin, the match is considered a draw so the winning is X
    • If City wins by two or more goals, Manchester wins
    • If the outcome is a draw or City loses, then Everton wins

The difference from the Asian handicap is that 1X2 always has three possible outcomes. The numerical representation of the handicap might be slightly confusing in the beginning but just watch out and you will get used to it.

  • Asian Handicap
Asian handicap, which is abbreviated to AH, is an interesting betting market which offers good betting opportunities. There is a lot to say about it so I have analysed it in more detail in this article.

The most essential about AH is that it is reflected through a goal advantage for one of the teams, thus eliminating the draw as a possible outcome. The goal handicap is usually represented as a decimal: 0.5, 1.5, etc., so that way the draw is eliminated and you have only two final outcomes to bet on.

In Asian handicap, one of the teams can also be given an integer number of goals head-start (0, 1, 2, etc.) but in contrast to three-way handicap, if the away team is given a one-goal advantage and the home team wins by one goal, the bookmaker will refund your bet.

  • Over/Under
Over/Under is the second most widespread betting market.

In this system you predict if the number of goals scored in a match will be higher or lower than a total set by the bookmaker. The goals are most commonly represented as decimal values: 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, etc., so that way you will either win or lose.

Another possibility is having Over/Under featuring Asian lines; more about Asian handicap can be found here.

There could also be integer values (1, 2, 3, etc.), so if you bet on Over/Under and the number of goals matches the specified margin exactly, the bookmaker will refund your bet.

One more type of Asian lines with Over/Under is 0.75, 1.25, etc. These are a bit trickier but you will figure them out after a couple of bets. They actually split your bet in two halves.

    Example 1

    Over/Under 2.25 goals at 2.00 odds
    £10 bet on Over

    Bet split in two halves:
    Bet 1 – £5 on Over 2 goals
    Bet 2 – £5 on Over 2.5 goals

2 goals scored in the match
    – Bet 1 is refunded because the margin is matched
    – Bet 2 loses because the match is under 2.5

3 or more goals scored in the match
    – both bets win

0 or 1 goals scored in the match
    – both bets lose

    Example 2

    Over/Under 1.75 goals at 2.00 odds
    £10 bet on Over

    Bet split in two halves:
    Bet 1 – £5 on Over 1.5 goals
    Bet 2 – £5 on Over 2 goals

2 goals scored in the match
    Bet 1 wins
    Bet 2 is refunded

3 or more goals scored in the match
    – both bets win

0 or 1 goals scored in the match
    – both bets lose

  • Both Teams to Score
Both Teams to Score, or Goal/Goal, Goal/No Goal. The idea of this market is for punters to predict whether both teams or only one of them will score in a match. This betting option is available at full- and half-time.
  • Over/Under Corners
You predict whether the number of corners in a match will be over or under a specified count. Corners allow for multiple betting opportunities which are described in this article.
  • Draw No Bet
Draw No Bet is a betting option that eliminates the draw as a possible outcome and offers odds on wins only. Your bet will be refunded in case of a draw.
  • Half Time/Full Time
HT/FT is a market that requires you to predict the outcome of a match at half-time and full-time, e.g. X/1, 1/1, 2/X, etc.
  • Correct Score
Correct Score: you need to predict the final outcome of a match.
  • Double Chance
This betting option covers two out of three possible outcomes of a match.

1Х- host team win or draw
Х2 – away team win or draw
12 – host team win or away team win

You win if either of the options you backed occurs.

  • Over/Under Cards
You predict whether the number of cards in a match will be over or under a specified count.
  • First Team to Score
First Team to Score is a betting option in which you predict which team will score first in a match.
  • Number of Goals
Number of Goals: you need to predict how many goals will be scored in a match by choosing from three options.
  • Goal in Either Half
Bet on whether there will be at least one goal in either half of a match.
  • Even/Odd
Bet on whether the total goals scored in a match will be an even or odd number.
  • Win to Nill
Win To Nill: whether a team will win without conceding a goal.
